Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
A CFL bulb is a type of light bulb that screws into a standard light socket, such as a lamp or ceiling light fixture.
CFL bulbs are made of glass, a ceramic and metal base, a powder called phosphor, and a very small of amount of mercury (the mercury in a CFL is about the size of the period at the end of this sentence. The mercury contained in a thermometer is about 100 times more than a CFL).
CFLs use much less energy and last up to 10 times longer than standard light bulbs.
There are several ways to properly dispose of CFL bulbs.
- You may bring CFL bulbs to SOCRRA through our Household Hazardous Waste Program by calling 248-288- 5153 to schedule an appointment.
- Retail locations such as Home Depot and Lowes also accept CFLs at their stores. Confirm with your local store before bringing the bulbs in.
