Yard Waste

Yard waste – as defined by the State of Michigan – includes:

  • Leaves
  • Grass clippings
  • Vegetable and other garden debris
  • Trimmings from shrubs, brush and trees less than 4 feet in length and 2 inches in diameter

Since yard waste can be recovered and recycled into a useful product – compost – the State of Michigan has banned yard waste from disposal in landfills.  SOCRRA converts yard waste (and fruit and vegetable scraps) collected from residents in its 12 member communities into compost, a nutrient-rich soil amendment.

Yard waste does NOT include:

  • Agricultural wastes
  • Animal waste
  • Garbage
  • Stumps
  • Sewage sludge
  • Roots
  • Branches or tree trimmings greater than 4 feet in length and 2 inches in diameter
