We are now one month into the new year, and what better time to consider a few “green” resolutions for 2021. Just follow the 3 R’s - Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle! And there is a bonus R - Refresh! REDUCE: make less waste in the first place! Skip the bag for smaller purchases and leave the bag at the store. Start meal planning to cut down on wasted food. All these little actions can lead to less waste to dispose and recycle. REUSE: consider buying second hand before purchasing new. There are so many free sites and marketplaces that sell (or trade) for goods. As the saying goes “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure”. Check out second hand stores and online resources to find a new-to-you treasure. RECYCLE: there are many rooms in the home that produce items that can be recycled. One of the most overlooked is the bathroom. Toilet paper rolls, empty tissue boxes, and shampoo bottles are just a few. Look around your home and commit to recycling more materials from another space. REFRESH: Ok, so this isn’t one of the traditional 3 R’s, but as we start a new year, what could be a better step than to refresh ourselves on the recycling rules of what can and cannot be placed in the recycling cart or bin?
