With all the different types of batteries used today, it can be confusing to know what do with them. Alkaline or rechargeable? Lithium ion or Nickel cadmium? You don’t need to learn chemistry to be part of the solution, but there are a few easy steps you can take. To make battery and electronics disposal easy for you and reduce the instances of batteries sparking and exploding, SOCRRA has refreshed it’s recommended handling of batteries. First, please do not discard your end-of-life personal electronics and batteries in the trash or recycling cart. Batteries can spark or explode, which can lead to fires in collection trucks and at recycling and trash facilities. Fire damage from improperly disposed of batteries have cost recycling facilities millions of dollars in damage across the U.S. each year! The best way to get rid of these items is to schedule an appointment with SOCRRA’s Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Program. Next, please tape the ends of batteries to prevent the potential for sparking and ignition. Taping the batteries helps to “turn off” batteries and prevents the terminals from touching each other which can cause that spark. Lastly, please schedule an appointment with SOCRRA’s Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Program for safe disposal.
